What is a Special Education Advisory Committee?

  
A committee approved by the School Board to advise the superintendent of schools in identifying ways to make Special Education Programs as effective as possible.
  
What are the functions of the Special Education Local Advisory Committee?
   
  • Advise the School Board of unmet needs in the education of children with disabilities and submit periodic reports detailing recommendations.
  • Assist local schools in formulating and developing long-range plans for providing educational services.
  • Participate in the development of priorities and strategies to meet the needs of children with disabilities.
  • Work with the Radford City School Board to enhance community awareness and understanding of special education services.
  • Review the school system's annual updated special education plan and application for federal funding.
  
When does the Special Education Local Advisory Committee meet?
  
Meetings are held quarterly September through May and are open to the public. Each meeting is announced in the local newspapers. For further information or to confirm the date, location and time, you may call the School Board Office Special Education Department at 540-731-3647.
   
Who can serve on the Special Education Advisory Committee?
  
  • Parents, guardians, or family members of students who have disabilities such as:
  • * Autism * Orthopedically Impaired
    * Deaf-Blindness * Other Health Impaired
    * Developmentally Delayed * Specific Learning Disability
    * Emotional Disturbance * Speech/Language Impairment
    * Hearing Impaired including Deafness * Severe Disability
    * Mental Retardation * Traumatic Brain Injury
    * Multiple Disabilities * Visual Impairment including Blindness
    Representatives of public agencies concerned with the care of persons with disabilities
  • Radford City citizens who are interested in meeting the educational needs of children with disabilities
  • Local school personnel who serve as consultants to the committee
  • Individuals with disabilities
  • Representatives of local business or industry

The Parent Resource Center (PRC) promotes student success by helping parents and educators to plan together and to participate fully and effectively in their children's educational development. 

  

The Parent Resource Center is located in Room 25 in the Vocational Building at Radford High School.  If you want to visit the center please stop by the Central Office for a visitor’s pass.  The Parent Resource Center is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 10:30 AM – 5:00 PM or by appointment.  If you would like more information about the Parent Resource Center please email prc@rcps.org or call Peggy Kinzer at (540) 731-3649 ext. 6166.
