Reading and Language Arts includes Spelling, Grammar, Writing and Reading.
There is a routine that is followed in our class each week for these subjects.
The schedules are listed below.

Top of the page

  Spelling-

*Words are introduced on Monday.
*Students are given a pretest.  Students are responsible for learning only the missed words.
(If no more than two words are missed on the pretest then that individual is given Bonus words for the week.)
*Monday night-
Students are to write each word 3 times in cursive.
*Tuesday and Wednesday nights- Students are to complete the Spelling work assigned.
*All work is due on Thursday and is to be completed in cursive.
*The final Spelling test is administered on Friday

Grammar-. *Grammar lessons are taught on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
*These skills are emphasized in the stories studied in Reading each week.
*Some examples of the skills taught are: sentence types, subjects, predicates, nouns, pronouns, verbs, verb tenses, adjectives, adverbs, and possessives.

  Writing-                Formal Writing:
Writing lessons are taught on Fridays and other times when possible. The students are taught the writing process of: taking a given topic, brainstorming ideas for the topic on a graphic organizer, writing a rough draft  from that organizer, correcting mistakes, and then rewriting to have a final
well-written copy.
Journal Writing:
Students also write in a journal throughout the week.  The journals are for free writing and expression.
                 Poetry Fun    Poetry Fun Powerpoint
Reading- Students read stories each week to practice reading comprehension skills such as:
compare and contrast, recognizing main ideas and details, recognizing the author's purpose, using graphic sources to help with understanding, using context clues to help with deciphering unknown words....
Monday- The reading skill for the week is introduced and practiced. The vocabulary words are introduced. Students will practice the vocabulary words on Monday night.
Tuesday- The vocabulary words are reviewed and background is set for an understanding of the story.  Students begin reading the story.
Wednesday- The reading of the story is continued and it is discussed in great detail. Comprehension work is completed. Students should reread the story at home for a review of the content.
Thursday- A comprehension and vocabulary test is administered to check for understanding of the  skills taught.
Friday-     Writing lessons are taught.

Accelerated Reader is also encouraged and points rewarded.

Math

  Multiplication Facts-

Multiplication Facts are the basis for almost everything taught in fourth grade math.
Therefore, students must learn multiplication facts for 0-12.
As we begin the school year, our class builds ice cream sundaes based on the facts that are learned.
By the end of the first six weeks every student should know from memory the facts for 0-12.
.Division- After learning to multiply three digit numbers by two digit numbers, we learn that division is the inverse of multiplication.  Practicing division facts helps us learn to divide larger numbers by one digit numbers.
Other Math Objectives Taught in Fourth Grade-
Measurement using standard and metric units.
Probability
Geometric shapes
Fractions (Adding and Subtracting with like and unlike denominators)
Decimals
Graphing
Accelerated Math- Throughout the year the students work with a special computer generated program called Accelerated Math.
In this program students are assigned math objectives and then the computer generates practices for particular objectives.
After students completes the practice, a scan card is filled in and scanned through the computer.
This creates a computer generated report.  Once an objective has been practiced with success , a test is created.  This math program is used to supplement the classroom curriculum and will allow students to work at their own pace and ability level.
