"Q-Crew" Library Helpers

The "Q-Crew" is a vital part of the Belle Heth Elementary.  The team  of 25 fifth-grade students works in the mornings from 8:00-9:00  helping Mrs. Q take care of library collection and assist fellow  patrons.  The team is divided into groups and each student is assigned a certain day of the week.  Daily responsibilities begin with starting up all the library computers, shelving returned books, checking-out books to fellow patrons, checking-in returned books,   and maintaining an adopted shelf section.  Students also assist with special duties throughout the year like preparing new books & magazines, assisting with Book Fairs,  and sorting prizes, and  making deliveries to classes.

What kind of things do you do when  you are a Library Helper?

Students work in the mornings from 8:00-9:00.  Each child has a scheduled day of the week.  Library Helpers are responsible for starting up computers, shelving returned books, checking out  materials to fellow classmates during their regular library time, and picking up books from classes.  Getting your "license" to drive the library cart is something everyone looks forward to.

How do I become a Library Helper?

It all starts when you come to Belle Heth as a fourth grader.  Mrs. Q looks for students who are responsible, helpful to others,    demonstrate enthusiasm, and maintain a positive attitude.  Fourth grade teachers make recommendations as well.  Students must    keep up with class work and demonstrate good citizenship   throughout 4th grade.  A final list of candidates is developed, then those nominated have the opportunity to write an essay describing  why they would be the "best library helper ever."  Mrs. Q reviews the essays then carefully selects the slate of future helpers.
