SWVGS Application/Selection Process (for current sophomores who will have completed math through Algebra II by the end of the year):
In October, students planning to apply to SWVGS must take the PSAT (registration in guidance).
Informational meetings for parents are held at the high school in or before November.
Interested students will have the opportunity to tour the SWVGS in January/February. Applications are available from Mrs. Swope immediately after the tour, and must be completed and returned by February 28. (Students are responsible for asking for three teacher letters of recommendation and notifying teachers that these letters must be returned to the liaison by February 28; all letters must be from high school teachers and include at least one science teacher and one math teacher.)
Incomplete applications and any applications turned in after the February18 deadline will not be accepted.
During March, the RHS Governor's School liaison, Lisa Swope, will review each application, attach a high school transcript along with relevant PSAT, SOL, and other standardized test scores, and complete the Candidate Rating Sheet for each applicant. Students will have additional normed achievement and aptitude testing. The coordinator will temporarily remove student names and present this information to the Selection Committee, which will review all applications and supporting materials. The Selection Committee will determine each nominee's eligibility to attend and will rank the applicants. Once the selection process is complete (late March or early April), each applicant will be notified in writing of the status of his/her application, and within five school days those selected will accept or decline the invitation to attend SWVGS.
The number of students attending SWVGS each year is determined by the Radford City School Board, and is based on available funding.
See the home page of the Web site for the application, intent form, and NRCC enrollment forms.

2011 Summer Residential Governor's School Participants
| The Summer Residential
Governor's Schools for the Gifted offer enormous opportunities for rising high school
juniors and seniors of exceptional ability. The Virginia Department of Education offers state Summer Residential Governor's Schools in
humanities, math/science/technology, life sciences, agriculture, and visual and
performing arts (visual art, vocal music, instrumental music, dance, and
drama). Highly competitive mentorships are available in engineering
and marine science. Students also may apply to the Foreign Language
Academies, or to the Regional Governor's School at Wise, which offers a
program in drama. All of these opportunities are funded entirely by
the local school division and the General Assembly. Radford High School nominates candidates for these programs, and the Virginia Department of Education makes the final selections. Admission is based on the student's written application and essay, standardized test scores, GPA, class rank, and written teacher recommendations. Admission is highly selective.
