| Independent Study is offered as
a non-weighted elective at both Radford High School and at Dalton. The high school
course involves 150 logged hours outside of school and a year-long
mentorship. The eighth grade course is research-based requires at
least 72 hours of logged research and writing outside of school.
Students meet with Mrs. Swope weekly to troubleshoot and discuss progress.
Interested students must meet with Mrs. Swope during spring course
registration and return their signed contracts to her by the end of May. According to Roeper Review, research indicates that students learn most when they explore areas of interest in self-directed studies that are aided by a mentor (high school level) or a supervising teacher (intermediate school level). |
