Academic Year Governor's School

Southwest Virginia Governor's School
Radford City Schools will participate in the Southwest Virginia Governor's School in Pulaski, beginning in the fall of 2007. Current tenth graders may apply, and qualified candidates will possess outstanding grades in honors science and advanced math courses, high standardized test scores on the Stanford Nine, the Otis-Lennon, and the PSAT, and excellent teacher recommendations. Students must commit to attend the half-day academic-year governor's school during both junior and senior years at RHS.

SWVGS Application/Selection Process (for current sophomores who will have completed math through Algebra II by the end of the year):
Initial information about the application process is announced each September (local newspaper, school announcements).
In October, students planning to apply to SWVGS must take the PSAT (registration in guidance).
Informational meetings for parents (at night) and students (during the day) are held at the high school in November.
Interested students will have the opportunity to tour the SWVGS in December/January. Applications are available from Mrs. Swope immediately after the tour, and must be completed and returned by February 1. (Students are responsible for asking for three teacher letters of recommendation and notifying teachers that these letters must be returned to the liaison by February 1.)
Incomplete applications and any applications turned in after the February 1 deadline will not be accepted.
During February and March, the RHS Governor's School liaison, Lisa Swope, will review each application, attach a high school transcript along with relevant PSAT, SOL, and other standardized test scores, and complete the Candidate Rating Sheet for each applicant. She will temporarily remove student names and present this information to the Selection Committee, which will review all applications and supporting materials. The Selection Committee will determine each nominee's eligibility to attend and will rank the applicants. Once the selection process is complete, each applicant will be notified in writing of the status of his/her application.
The number of students attending SWVGS is determined by the Radford City School Board, and is based on available funding.

2006 Students Attending Regional and State Governor's Schools |
| The Summer Residential
Governor's Schools for the Gifted offer enormous opportunities for rising high school
seniors. The Virginia Department of Education offers tuition-free
state summer residential Governor's Schools in
humanities, math/science/technology, life sciences, and visual and
performing arts (visual art, vocal music, instrumental music, dance, and
drama). Highly competitive mentorships are available in engineering
and marine science. Students also may apply to the Foreign Language
Academies, or to the Regional Governor's School at Wise, which offers a
program in drama. Radford High School nominates candidates for these programs, and the Virginia Department of Education makes the final selections. Admission is based on the student's written application and essay, standardized test scores, GPA, class rank, and written teacher recommendations. Admission is highly selective.
