What is my child doing on the Internet?

Parents are often intimidated by the Internet or trust that it is like another electronic game and has no hidden dangers.  Both of these can lead to problems for your child.  Here are some general guidelines if your child is using the Internet at home:

1.  Ask your child to teach you the Internet.

2.  Let them know that there are warning words that should be avoided.

3.  Take a class or get a friend to show you how to see what has been on your child's computer.

4.  Let your child know that bad things have happened to kids because of the Internet so you will be checking in on his or her activity from time to time.

5.  Remember that instant messengers, chat rooms and blogs are used by people who want to remain anonymous.  Never assume their info is correct.

6.  Let your child know that under no circumstances will they meet anyone in real life that they met on the Internet.

7.  If troubling or dangerous communications show up, do not hesitate to call the police.

8.  Use a contract for the privilege of access to the internet.
