Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader (AR) is a comprehension based program. Students read a book that is designated AR. The student will take a multiple choice question test on the computer. This will test their comprehension on what they have read. The goal of this program is to foster the love for reading. Students need to be successful in reading.

 

Can students use the book while taking the test?

No. The students need to read the book before coming to the computer.

What grades participate?

Grades2 & 3.

Where can I get an AR list?

You can access one for the library's WebPages and also at the Radford Public Library.

Where can students take a test?

Students can take tests in the Computer Lab, Library/Media Center, and individual classrooms.

When can a student exchange a book?

Students come to the Media Center once a week as a class for instruction and book exchange. Additional times are available for check-out during open times.

How many books may a student check out?

K-1 may check out 1, Grade 2- 2 books, Grade 3- 3 books. Students may keep their books for one week. If they wish to keep them longer, they need to bring them to the library to renew.

How are AR books labeled?

AR books have large yellow dots on the spine.

How are students awarded for reading?

Points are accumulated for each 6-week grading period. Students and teachers set individual goals to be met each 6 weeks period. If a students reaches his/her goal, their name and picture are placed on the Galaxy of Stars bulletin board. If a student meets their goal four times, they will attend the End of the Year Celebration.

What happens to the tests from the previous year?

Once a child has taken a test on a book, he/she cannot take it again. If a student read a book last year, took a test, then it cannot be retaken.
