Dear Parents,
You are your child's first
and best teacher! Here are some ways to connect your child's home learning
to the learning that takes place at school. You can support your child's
learning at home by using the Take-Me-Home stories sent home each week.
These Take-Me-Home materials have activities that relate to the Featured Book
that the children have been reading at school and on the computer during
Breakthrough to Literacy time. In addition, there are selected leveled
books sent home for homework twice weekly that each child can read at
their independent level. Set aside some time each day to listen to your
child read these books - ten to fifteen minutes daily is great! Children
also need to have a special place to keep their books and reading and writing
materials at home so that they are convenient to use.

- Read to your child every day.
- Listen to your child read every day.
- Write to and with your child daily.
- Set realistic expectations for
learning.
- Create a home environment that
supports learning.
- Ask questions every day about your
child's day at school.
- Play word, letter, and board games
with your child.
- Listen to your child.
- Be involved in reading and writing
yourself. You are a wonderful model!
- Know what is happening at your
child's school.
- Be involved - attend conferences,
programs, open houses, performances.
- Volunteer in the classroom.
- Tell stories together.
- Visit the public library.
- Turn off the TV and video games.
