Welcome to Spelling

Spelling is a developmental and
conceptual process that plays a key role in reading fluency and accuracy,
writing fluency, vocabulary development, and comprehension. Students need
explicit instruction in learning spelling patterns, word structures, features of
words, and spelling rules.
Children move
along a developmental continuum for writing and spelling. At the early
emergent stage, they are generally using pre-phonetic or early phonetic
spellings. They need to become phonemically aware of sounds and syllables.
Upper emergent spellers are generally at the advanced phonetic stage and are
able to match sounds and symbols.
