Title One

What is Title 1?
Title 1 is a federally funded program designed to provide
supplemental services to meet the special educational needs of students who are
at risk of not meeting the Commonwealth of Virginia’s academic standards in
Language Arts and Mathematics.
The goal of Title 1 at McHarg Elementary is to provide assistance to students in Language Arts and Mathematics for the purpose ensuring their success in the regular classroom.
What Does Title 1 offer?
-small group or individual instruction
-implementation of a variety of teaching methods and materials
-instruction planned to meet the needs of each child
How are children selected for Title 1?
-test results from the Stanford 9 and PALS (Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening)
-teacher recommendations

How you can help your child at home?
-Read to your child daily. (at least 15 minutes each day)
-Set a good example; let your child see you reading.
-Ask your child to read to you.
-Take advantage of resources (i.e. the public library)
-Take an active role in your child’s education.
-Limit the time your child watches TV and plays video games.
-Discuss words you see on signs and labels.
