New Attendance Policy

In accordance with the state of Virginia and the federal government, Radford City Public Schools enforces a compulsory attendance policy requiring all students of school age to attend public schools provided they are in good health and good standing in the community. Our compulsory attendance policy is as follows:

  1. Upon the fifth (5) absence without parental notification to the school or sufficient reason for missing school, the student’s parents will be contacted and a conference will be established for the purpose of improving the child’s attendance.
  2. Upon the sixth (6) absence without parental notification to the school or sufficient reason for missing school, the student’s parents will again be contacted and another meeting will be scheduled to further explore ways to improve the child’s attendance. During this meeting the administration will express that the next such absence will result in notification to Child Services.
  3. Upon the seventh (7) absence without parental notification to the school or sufficient reason for missing school, the student and parents will be referred to Child Services of Radford and a Child in Need of Supervision (CHINS) petition will be filed. Filing a CHINS petition may result in a summons for the family to appear in Radford City Juvenile and Domestic Court for a hearing before a judge.

NURSE’S NOTES

We’re off to another busy year.  Already we’ve had a few cases of intestinal virus and allergy problems.  Please remind your children at home (as we do at school) that frequent hand washing is the best prevention for most common illnesses.  Also, children this age are growing very rapidly.  It is important for them to eat nutritious meals and get plenty of sleep.

A FEW REMINDERS:

If your child is absent please notify the office before 9:00.  You need to do this each day your child is out except for when you will be out of town and you have previously notified us.

Your child needs to stay home if his temperature is 100 degrees or higher.  He may return once the temperature remains below 100 degrees for 24 hours without the aid of Tylenol, etc.

Students are not allowed to transport medication on the bus.

If your child requires prescription medication at school, your physician must fill out and sign a school medication authorization form.  If the medication is over the counter, the same form must be completed by the parent.

If you have phone number changes, please let us know.  It is very important that we be able to contact you if your child becomes ill.

Tips from ikeepsafe.org:

Keep the computer in a common room in the house and position the monitor so it's available for public viewing.

Establish rules for using the Internet and teach children important safety guidelines.

Use blocking software or filtering programs, but don't rely on them as your only line of defense.

Teach children that people online are not always who they say they are.

Frequently check the Internet history to see which sites your children are visiting.

Monitor your children's email account. Let them know you're doing it and why.

Spend time with your children online. Have them show you their favorite sites.
