Radford High School..........continuing a tradition of excellence Radford High School (472 students in grades 9-12) is a comprehensive high school located in the independent city of Radford, Virginia (population 15,859). Radford is situated in the heart of the New River Valley and lies between the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains. The city's distinguishing geographic feature is the New River, which flows northward along the length of the city and provides ample opportunities for industry and recreation. During its two-hundred year history, Radford has grown from a simple tavern on a dusty stagecoach route to a small city boasting a four-year university and an array of industries, banking institutions, retail establishments, businesses, and restaurants. A new hospital/medical center is located just outside of city limits. The city is proud to be called home by two of Virginia's former governors. Linked to Interstate 81 at exits 105 and 109, the city is most noted for its quality of life, opportunities for recreation, an emphasis on education, and natural beauty. Radford built its first secondary school in 1909. Facing increased enrollment, Radford High School was built in 1928 on the site of the present high school. During the next four decades, new construction added to the size and scope of the school. In 1970, a fire destroyed much of the building. The community rebuilt the school on its original location, salvaging the parts of the building unscathed by fire. The developing needs of our school have prompted additions to our facilities, such as a new fine arts wing, a fitness center, and renovations to the east wing. Radford High School offers academic and vocational programs, as well as access to Virginia's Virtual AP School. Advanced Placement classes are offered within the school curriculum in all core areas (except science, which offers a dual enrollment course), and additionally in computer science and art history. A dedicated special education staff provides both self-contained and mainstreamed instruction. A 504 coordinator spends one period of her day meeting with parents and teachers, as well as documenting services for students whose physical disabilities necessitate the accommodations offered in a 504 plan. Gifted students receive enrichment services from an on-site gifted coordinator, who works with teachers to develop differentiated education plans that outline services offered through the regular classroom teachers. Our school also offers an excellent fine arts program, foreign language instruction, and student publications such as the yearbook and newspaper. Even though we are a small school, students may enroll in electives such as Minority Studies, Television Production, and independent studies. Outside of the classroom, VSHL sports and activities, as well as numerous clubs and organizations, contribute to the total growth of our students as individuals and as members of society. Student, teacher, and parent surveys show high levels of satisfaction with the quality of instruction and community atmosphere of the high school. Our faculty is highly qualified, with half of all teachers holding master's degrees. The community is supportive of the school, both in its presence at school events and through its financial contributions. The Radford Foundation, which is privately funded, awards annual grants to teachers for instructional purposes. Also, a privately-funded baseball field currently is under construction next to our city's newly-built recreation center. The student body benefits from the spirit of community cooperation and the quest for excellence that form the foundation of our school's endeavors. Radford High School has earned full accreditation through SOL testing, is in compliance with the No Child Left Behind Act, and scores above state and national averages on Stanford Nine, OLSAT, and AP testing. Radford High School ranks second in the state in Wachovia Cup Academic Competition (Group A). Our MACC (academic competition) teams frequently distinguish themselves in the regional MACC Super Bowl, and our Scholastic Bowl team finished first in state competition during the 2005-06 academic year. RHS students frequently attend both state and regional Summer Residential Governor's Schools for the Gifted, and during two of the past three years, the RHS nominees to the Senate Youth Program advanced to the top tier of state candidates. Individual student achievements include National Merit commendations and an honorable mention in the Jamestown 2007 Commemorative Stamp and Cachet Historic Art Project. Our band and choir students are selected for district, regional, and all-state ensembles, and our drama students excel in district and regional competition. Nowhere is our emphasis on lifelong learning more evident that at our graduation ceremony, where in 2006 ninety-two percent (92%) of our seniors indicated plans to attend either a two- or four-year college immediately after high school. Special Bobcat Pride is reserved for our athletic teams, which have established a long tradition of wide student participation and have fostered physical and personal growth among their participants. During the spring of 2006, seven of our sports teams participated in regional competition (boys' soccer, girls' soccer, boys' tennis, girls' tennis, baseball, boys' track, and girls' track). Our cross country team placed eighth in the state in fall competition, and our boys' basketball team advanced to state competition in 2006. Radford High School's continuing tradition of excellence produces an environment that encourages students to participate in school activities and to excel both in and out of the classroom. We try to give each student the necessary tools to achieve his or her potential so that each child's life can be as rewarding as possible. Of course, schools, as living entities, must continually adapt to changing needs both within our school and in the larger community. Radford High School's vision for the future is connected to its past and its present: our quest is to meet all challenges through a continuing tradition of excellence. SACS-CASI
