2017 - 2018 Indicator 8 Parent Involvement Survey

The 2017-2018 Indicator 8 Parent Involvement Survey collection period is upon us.  Please note that the format of the Indicator 8 survey has changed from last year.  For the 2017-2018 school year collection, a printed survey and postage paid return envelope will be sent to each local educational agency (LEA) special education administrator for dissemination to parents of children with disabilities as they deem appropriate.  There will also be an online survey for parents to access.  This year the printed survey and the online survey asks respondents to answer several questions, of which question 6 will be the sole measure used to gauge your division’s Indicator 8 results as it relates to the parent’s agreement that your LEA facilitated parent involvement as a means of improving services and results for children with disabilities.  The additional questions will be used only for providing school divisions with additional feedback on how parents responded to other issues related to the special education process.  The printed surveys will be mailed directly to all LEAs no later than May 1, 2018, and in quantities to match your LEA’s December 1 child count, plus 10 percent.

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is asking for your assistance in promoting the completion of the survey by each of your families who has a child with a disability and is provided special education services through an individualized education program (IEP) by whatever means you deem appropriate.  Families who have more than one child receiving special education services should be afforded the opportunity to complete a survey for each of their children.

Collection of survey data may begin immediately upon receipt of the printed survey and the opening of the online survey.  This year’s timeline for completion and submission of survey responses, in any modality, is set at September 30, 2018.  The VDOE has renewed its goal of increasing the number of survey responses we receive.  As such, during the collection window, the VDOE will engage in a number of technical assistance outreach efforts to parents and parent organizations to ensure that every parent of a child with a disability in the Commonwealth has the opportunity to participate in the survey.
