Virtual Radford 2020-2021
One option is the Hybrid Program which students will attend school 2 days a week in person in a school building and complete lessons outside of school 3 days a week through Google Classroom, Seesaw and/or paper/pencil assignments.
The second option is a total online learning experience where students will not attend school in person, but access lessons/assignments through Google Classroom and the learning management system, Canvas, Monday through Friday. This online learning experience for students is being referred to as Virtual Radford (VR). Students enrolled in VR can expect the following.
VR students will be enrolled as an RCPS student and assigned to a classroom teacher (PreK-6 teachers) or course content teachers (grades 7-12).
VR students in middle/high school will follow the student schedule as outlined in PowerSchool Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.
VR students will access online lessons on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday through the assigned teacher’s Google Classroom platform and the Canvas learning management system.
VR students will have access to academic support from their assigned teacher(s) through office hours participation, email, and Wednesday synchronous learning opportunities.
McHarg/Belle Heth will offer synchronous (live online in real time)/asynchronous (recorded and posted online) lessons on Wednesday. All VR and Hybrid Program students will participate in these learning experiences.
Dalton and Radford High School will offer synchronous (live online in real time)/asynchronous (recorded and posted online) lessons on Wednesday. All VR and Hybrid Program students will participate in these learning experiences.
Participation in RCPS athletic teams, RCPS extra-curricular activities, virtual field trips and presentations, and all other activities that the Hybrid Program students have access to.
Chromebooks will be provided to students enrolled in VR.

Solicited feedback regarding the reopening of schools for the 2020 - 2021 school year
RCPS has solicited feedback regarding the reopening of schools for the 2020-2021 school year from the school community utilizing a variety of different means including surveys, committees, and individual comments. This feedback along with information from the Virginia Department of Education, Virginia Department of Health, and the New River Health District is influencing the plan of how RCPS will open the 2020-2021 school year. While we, like the majority of survey respondents, would like to open the schools with face to face (F2F) instruction all day, we are not confident we will have the appropriate support to open with that most popular format. We are still considering which delivery of instruction we will be able to open the year with and are considering:
- Traditional face to face (F2F),
- Online both synchronously (the teacher is present at the same time as the learner – real-time interaction) and asynchronously (the teacher and the learner are engaged in the learning process at the same time, but not in real-time),
- A hybrid which would be a combination of face to face (F2F) and online/paper assignments.
School community survey results favored the traditional F2F model with the second choice being half day F2F/half day online if traditional F2F cannot be implemented at the beginning of the 20-21 school year.
In addition to the traditional or hybrid models offered on the survey, a full online experience for respondents to choose was available if they were not in favor of the other instructional delivery models. A few families choose the online only experience and as a result, RCPS is offering families interested in a completely remote educational experience for their child a virtual option. We understand that you have concerns about your child(ren) returning to school in person during the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, RCPS will be offering a remote learning program through, “Virtual Radford.” Virtual Radford will use the online platform offered by Virtual Virginia and families wishing to keep their students’ learning as remote as possible can register their child(ren) to participate in Virtual Radford program for the 20-21 school year free of charge.
Virtual Radford will be aligned to the Virginia Standards of Learning and delivered through Virtual Virginia’s platform. Radford teachers will be managing the online content and available to assist Virtual Radford students during scheduled office hours. Chromebooks will be provided to students enrolled in Virtual Radford.
If you are interested in having your child participate in the Virtual Radford’s remote education, please email the principal of the school in which your child(ren) would be assigned:
