Knitting for Knowledge ("Casting on" New Language Skills)
On Thursday and Friday afternoons, language students gather to use bamboo knitting needles and learn an age old craft from the Colonial Days. Learning to knit and crochet is fun, creative and has many educational benefits. These skills can help increase working memory and develop the student’s ability to chunk information.
Math vocabulary words such as "length", "width", "increase", "decrease", "more than and less than", counting by 2's and 3's are incorporated into the language learning and knitting sessions. These activities are proving to be fun and relaxing as well as giving the students a sense of accomplishment, follow-through, improved fine motor coordination, practice with reading skills and critical thinking.
